Welcome to this week’s edition of breakfast in bed, a free newsletter delivered to your inbox every Sunday morning. The intention behind the newsletter is to serve as a distraction from your existential Sunday dread—AKA the Sunday Scaries. It is broken into five categories, each of which represents one of the ways I distract from my own Sunday Scaries. Thank you for reading!

This week’s romance recommendation is Talking at Night by Claire Daverley and it is the perfect fall romance. Technically, it isn’t set in a particular season, instead we follow Will and Rosie through many seasons of life, starting in high school and ending with their mid-30s, but something about the prose gives me cozy, fall vibes.
Next we have the The Wedding People by Alison Espach. You will see this featured in my August reading recap next week, but I couldn’t wait until then to sing it’s praise!! It also isn’t so much a recommendation as it is a mandatory reading assignment for everyone. The Wedding People is one of the most fabulous, life-affirming, beautiful novels I have ever read and I truly could not recommend it more.
Bonus points because it is chock full of real-life Newport, RI references which makes me so happy because Newport is where my husband is from, where we got married, and where we spend most of our summers!
Finally, this week’s wildcard recommendation is My Last Innocent Year by Daisy Alpert Florin. My Last Innocent Year is a coming-of-age story, set on a college campus, making it perfect for back-to-school season. It follows our protagonist’s final semester of school, as she grapples with what awaits her in the real world, while having an affair with her professor.

My husband was out of town for a few nights last week and I was too lazy to cook while he was gone. Dinners consisted of haphazard girl dinners, including one that was reminiscent of childhood — boxed mac & cheese and a lemon-lime soda.
I am well-aware that Goodles and Oli-Pop are not much better for me than their OG counterparts, but they are both insanely delicious, so let’s just all pretend, okay?
shop
This week’s shop section is brought to you by my all time favorite movies, When Harry Met Sally! I watched it for the billionth time last week and felt very inspired by the fashion, so I made a Pinterest board with ideas for fall outfits, which then sparked the idea for a new, vision board inspired approach to the shop section.
It was a really fun, impromptu creative exercise and I think I really like the way it turned out. I’m going to play around with similar formatting for future shop sections, so please let me know if you have feedback!!
Here is the link to everything featured above on ShopMy. Note, the link does contain some affiliate links :)
Sidenote, I really wasn’t sure if I would be able to pull off the barrel jean trend, but I went jean shopping yesterday and tried a few on… I’m afraid to say, I am obsessed with them and did end up buying them!

This episode of The Liz Moody Podcast was fascinating. It explores the importance of continuing to introduce novelty into our lives as we age and the way host, Liz Moody, does so through what she refers to as ‘the novelty rule’. It’s a really interesting concept and I am very interested in implementing some of the strategies she shares into my own life. Highly recommend giving it a listen!
That’s all for today!! If you are a US-based reader, I hope you’re having a fabulous Labor Day Weekend!
I’ll be back on Tuesday, but if you want to see more from me in the meantime, follow along over on Instagram.
XOXO,
Maddie
loving as always! loooove the vision board, and as always love the scroll content
I've added Talking at Night and My Last Innocent Year to my list! And, nothing beats boxed mac and cheese during these pre-fall evenings 😏
