Welcome to this week’s edition of breakfast in bed, a free newsletter delivered to your inbox every Sunday morning. The intention behind the newsletter is to serve as a distraction from your existential Sunday dread—AKA the Sunday Scaries. It is broken into five categories, each of which represents one of the ways I distract from my own Sunday Scaries. Thank you for reading!

The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna
If your fall TBR list is in need of a rom-com, look no further. The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches is the cutest, coziest little read. It features some predictable, but beloved tropes — grumpy/sunshine and found family anyone?! — and is sure to warm your heart.
Sorrow and Bliss by Meg Mason
To balance the scales, the next recommendation — Sorrow and Bliss — is a heavier read. Sorrow and Bliss is very much a character driven story and focuses on one woman’s experience with mental illness and a crumbling marriage. If you are a fan of Sally Rooney, Clare Daverley, Coco Mellors, or Ottessa Moshfegh, this is definitely a book for you.
Know My Name by Chanel Miller
Many of you probably recall the Stanford Swimmer sexual assault case from a few years ago, the author of Know My Name — Chanel Miller — was Brock Turner’s victim. Her memoir is one of the most heartbreakingly beautiful books I have ever read and will change the way you think about sexual assault and our criminal justice systems forever.

This week was crazy busy and I am very behind on Substack — hoping to catch up today, but here are a few pieces I read and loved!

eat
This Roast Cod with Little Tomatoes and Assorted Olives from Food52 was an amazing weeknight dinner this past week. It was super easy to put together, — seriously, it took no time at all — and it felt way fancier and more indulgent than it was.

listen
I’ve talked about the Mo News podcast on here before, but with the US Presidential Election looming large, I’m sharing it again. The Mo News podcast and the Mo News Premium Instagram account are my favorite ways to get the news. The team does a great job separating fact from fiction and explains things in a very unbiased and logical way. Highly recommend giving them a follow if you are a US-based reader.
That’s all for this week!! Thank you so much for reading. I’ll be back on Tuesday, but if you want to keep up with me in realtime, follow along on Instagram.
XOXO,
Maddie
