Hi!
Thank you all so much for the birthday wishes and kinds words on my last post! Hearing how my words resonated with so many of you meant the world and connecting with people via my writing is truly the most special birthday gift I could have received.
I realized I have been at this whole Substack thing for about a month and have never done a true introduction post. I don’t know if anyone actually cares, but I am a perennially nosy person and love learning about people’s offline lives, and I figure at least one or two of you must be as well.
Today, I thought it would be fun to share a little intro post, starting with the basics and ending with some icebreaker questions. If you feel so inclined, say hi in the comments and answer a few of the icebreakers so I can get to know you too!
the basics
Name: Madeline, but call me Maddie :)
Age: 32 as of yesterday!
Big Three: Cancer Sun, Pisces Moon, Capricorn Rising — I am very sensitive and emotional, a little moody, and fairly chaotic, but I hide it behind a very stoic and competent veneer.
Hometown: I am originally from New Jersey, but my family moved a bit when I was growing up. I spent my high school years in Florida and then, when I was in college, my family moved to Oklahoma.
College: I went to Elon University in North Carolina.
Where do I currently live? After college I moved to Denver on a whim. I spent seven years there before moving to San Francisco, then Boston. Currently I live in the Greater Boston Area with my husband and this is where we plan to stay. He’s from New England and we settled here to be close to family.
Career: I work in the tech industry for a fairly large company, but would ultimately love to find a way to have a full-time career in writing.
Pets: Toni (short for Rigatoni!!) is a 2.5 year-old miniature Aussiedoodle. I love him more than words. I am obsessed with him and think he is perfect in every single way. Yes, I am crazy, thanks for asking. But like… Come on. Look at his adorable little face!!!!!!!
icebreaker questions
I would love to hear some of your answers to these in the comments :)
Tattoos? I have four… all of which I got before the age of 20 and all of which I now regret to some degree. Thankfully they are all very small and, aside from ‘let it be’ on my right wrist, are not visible unless I’m in a swimsuit
Piercings? Three holes in each ear currently, but I’ve had additional ear piercings at various points in time, and had a belly button ring for a few years. I also got my nose pierced in college, but the stud somehow fell out in the middle of the night the same night I got it done and it bled all over my ex’s sheets and couldn’t find the stud in the morning, so I just let it close. Good times.
Coffee order? At home I just drink iced coffee with a little milk, but if I’m out, I love an vanilla iced latte the size of my head.
Favorite food? Ice cream is literally the greatest food on the entire planet and if you disagree, you’re wrong. (Just kidding.) (Kind of.)
Favorite movie(s): The Parent Trap and When Harry Met Sally
Favorite book(s): I honestly have too many to choose just one or two, but my favorite reads of the past year-ish are (in no particular order):
Talking at Night by Claire Daverley
Maame by Jessica George
Adelaide by Genevieve Wheeler
The Rachel Incident by Caroline O’Donoghue
Queenie by Candice Carty-Williams
My Last Innocent Year by Daisy Alpert Florin
Guy’s Girl by Emma Noyes
Cleopatra and Frankenstein by Coco Mellors
Early bird or night owl? Technically, I would say I’m an early bird because I get up between 5 and 6 everyday, but I’m at my most productive mid-day.
Gold or silver jewelry? I wear both, but prefer how gold looks on me and wear it more often.
Most overused word? Literally.
Five most used emojis? 🩷😂🤗🤦🏼♀️🙃
I’ll leave it here for now, but if there are any icebreakers you want my answers to, ask away! Also, please say hi and answer a few icebreakers in the comments!! I would love to get to know you all a bit better.
I’ll be back on Sunday with this week’s breakfast in bed, but if you would like to see more from me in the meantime, follow along over on Instagram!
XOXO,
Maddie
Good stuff! I live in New England as well but I’ve only ever lived here. Liked reading about all the places you’ve lived, a good chunk of the US!
always thrilled to meet another ice cream fanatic 🍦
