Thank you for sharing this. Sobriety is cool. The last time I went out to a bar and drank was in April last year. I went a whole year without it. Then, in April this year, I celebrated my one-year sobriety by having a margarita at my favourite Mexican restaurant—just one. I haven't drunk since and don't think I will for a long, long time. I wasn’t drunk, but I was tipsy. I stopped for mental health reasons because whenever I drink, I feel so horrible and cry the following day. It happened again in April, and I found myself balling my eyes out in public 24 hours after I had that margarita. I’m only 20, so I still feel that pressure whenever I go out with friends on a night out. At first, it was difficult because I would feel so stupid and just hyper-aware of everything going on, but now I have so much more fun without it. Honestly, people question if I am drinking when I go out even though I’m completely sober. Some people don't understand you can have fun at the club without drinking. I also feed off people’s energies. I also enjoy being the designated driver. Being alcohol-free is a beautiful thing & it makes me feel so much more present when I'm dancing with my friends. Thank you for your vulnerability! 🩷

I would have had such a difficult time not drinking when I was 20, that’s amazing you’ve been able to do it for so long in order to support your mental health!!! And I totally agree, I have more fun without it too and I still have a blast going out with my friends!!

I had no idea about the science behind different people finding alcohol to have a energising/sedative effect but I also definitely experience the energising effect. This was such an open and vulnerable essay 👏

Super interesting right?! I first heard about it on a podcast last year right after I quit and was shocked, it explained a lot 😅

And thank you so much!! That means so so much to hear on this post 🫶🏼

i Love you sharing on this topic. it is a shame that society bullies us to think making the decision not to drink is not cool. but actually! it’s so cool! i have entered the realm of being sober from alcohol over the last year-ish (just turned 31 in june), and it is fascinating/eye opening/kinda depressing how little we talk about the negative effects of alcohol as a society (and i say this coming from the perspective of a healthcare provider). i promise, we can have fun, be social, celebrate, live our lives without alcohol. i enjoyed reading Quit Like a Woman by Holly Whitaker as well as The Naked Mind by Annie Grace as additional resources on educating myself on the effects of alcohol.

again, love you shared this, i appreciate your vulnerability!

Thank you so so much for commenting!! I was so nervous to share this so it means a lot!

I completely agree. Obviously I knew alcohol wasn’t great for you but since I stopped drinking I’ve read both books you mentioned among others and listened to a ton of podcasts and it is truly so so horrible for you and very few people really understand just how horrible it really is
